Fitness to practise is key to our role as a regulator. And you, as those who employ nurses, midwives and nursing associates, have a vital part to play in this area.
A lot has changed in recent years that affects how fitness to practise works, and the way in which you support your workforce and interact with us. We made some changes before the pandemic, as part of our work to promote a just, open culture and ensure a person centred approach to fitness to practise.
When the pandemic hit, we had to pause some investigations, so the number of people going through fitness to practise increased. So more recent changes build on earlier progress and focus on stabilising our high caseload. We want to make long-lasting improvements that ensure we’re focusing on the cases we need to see, and then making the right decisions at the right time.
These changes are having a positive impact, but our caseload is still higher than we’d like it to be. We know that has an impact on you and we’re grateful for your patience while we continue to make this our top priority.
We’re hosting a webinar for employers on this topic on Thursday 23 June 2022 from 15:30 to 17:00. As part of that we’ll share more detail about recent changes that may have affected you, some best practice from an employer, and what’s likely to change in the future for fitness to practise. There’ll be a chance to ask questions, and we’ll record the session for those who can’t attend.
